Accessibility of At-Home Tests Will Enable Volunteers and Staff to Be Vigilant About Viruses As They Work in Close Quarters

Sunnyvale, CA, June 4, 2025 iHealth Labs, Inc. (iHealth®), a leading provider of digital health solutions, has made a donation of 2,500 at-home 3-in-1 COVID-19/Flu A & B test kits to the nonprofit Sierra Service Project to support its volunteer team and staff in managing symptoms of illness during their summer 2025 season program.

The Sacramento-based Sierra Service Project’s mission is to build strong connections and resilience among communities by training volunteers with skills for projects where they make necessary home repairs to underserved residents. Inherent in the purpose of the organization is the specific involvement of youth and young adult volunteers.

“Many thanks to iHealth for this donation of flu/COVID tests. They will be a huge help to our volunteers and staff in being diligent about monitoring their health, as many of them live and work together in close quarters in a camp setting for over nine weeks in the summer,” noted Sierra Service Project Executive Director Megan Taylor.

Understanding quickly who is positive for COVID or flu helps the Sierra Service Project team plan ahead for staffing needs and be more effective in completing projects for the low-income families that it works with. Per Taylor, volunteers and staff are all regularly tested twice a week and more as symptoms arise.

Differentiating between the flu and COVID-19 is also crucial so that those affected are careful about interacting with vulnerable populations. According to the CDC, groups that are at higher risk of severe complications from both illnesses include older adults (particularly 65+), people with underlying medical conditions, infants and children.

Taylor noted that the Sierra Service Project team is proactive about testing for viruses as they take on projects where they are around those that fall into the vulnerable category: "We work with lots of seniors who are home repair beneficiaries. Some of them are also immunocompromised. Other families we work with have young kids. The health and well-being of the residents of our partner communities is a central reason for our caution. This is why we cancelled our summer program in 2020 and 2021, during the heyday of the pandemic."

Testing for flu and COVID-19 is critical and recommended by infectious disease experts if one starts to feel ill, as the two viruses share common symptoms but require different treatments. Knowing which virus is responsible for those symptoms is crucial to seeking the correct course of action for treatment.

According to the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, COVID rates have seen a surge in July and August of every summer since 2020, due to a confluence of virological, behavioral and environmental factors. And while flu (influenza) activity tends to be lower in the summer than fall or winter seasons, it is still possible to get it in the summer as influenza viruses exist year round.

“It is immensely gratifying to know that the 3-in-1 tests will have a role in helping a community-minded organization like the Sierra Service Project and its team be proactive in managing their health and taking the proper steps to stay well as they serve the disadvantaged in their region,” stated Jack Feng, CEO of iHealth Labs. “We are more than happy to make this donation of tests as a demonstration of our purpose and continued commitment to developing products like the 3-in-1 to answer the call of public health needs.”
